Pro-Afoko press conference scuttled; shots heard, seats, canopies vandalized

A planned press conference in support of the suspended chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko, was scuttled by angry supporters of the party in the Ablekuma South Constituency.

One Attoh Quarshie who is said to be a supporter of Paul Afoko arranged the press conference at Chorkor apparently to address "recent developments in the NPP."

But the event was disrupted by persons who felt the press conference was not sanctioned by the Ablekuma South constituency executives of the opposition New Patriotic Party.

The 1st Vice-Chairman of the party in the constituency, Henry Nii Lantey Plange, told Joy News' Kwakye Afreh Nuamah no member of the executive was aware of the press conference.

He didn't understand why an elder of the party would hold a press conference without informing constituency executive whose duty it is to manage the affairs of the NPP in the constituency.

To exert authority and discipline in the constituency, he said the youth in the constituency mobilised themselves to stop any unauthorized event in the name of the party.
“There is authority in Ablekuma South constituency,” Nii Lantey insisted, “so we quickly put our arsenal together to call this programme off.”

There was a chaotic scene at the event ground when the pro-Afoko group clashed with the youth of the party. Canopies and chairs prepared for the event were destroyed in the heat of the confrontation.

Kwakye Afreh reported seeing a member of one of the sides firing gunshots. The press conference was eventually called off.
