PHOTOS: Six children, dozens drown in Volta Lake accident

A two year old boat carrying about sixty (60) persons and goods have capsized on the Volta River at a location close to Yeji. Six (6) children have so far been confirmed dead in an accident on the Volta River.


They were said to be passengers from a Kapra coming to Yeji in the Brong Ahafo Region.

A survivor, Alex Yaw Adjei Biney who lost two of his children- one and three years in the accident says the water started gushing into the boat when it hit a wood stamp in the river.

Yaw Agyei says they had were left with about thirty munities to complete the three hour journey to Yeji before the boat sank.

The accident, he said occurred after the boat drivers missed their paths.

He claimed the helmsmen who were sailing the boat as at when it capsized were not the true drivers of the boat.

According to Alex who claimed he was able to rescue his mother who was also a passenger in the boat, there are still bodies in the river which are yet to be rescued.

Meanwhile, Owner of the boat, TT speaking Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Monday said he but the boat very new; thus two years ago.

He said the boat has no insurance.

He noted that this accident happens to be the first one that his boat is involved in after the two years of its purchase.

TT claimed the boat had passed through where there were many stamps and had not run into one.

But the boat run into one at the Akosombo Queen’s path where they know very well that there are no stamps there

He believes the helmsmen did not see the stamp because the river has gone down.

However, the boat which is supposed to carry seventy-five (75) passengers had only fifty-seven (57); twenty-one (21) men, eleven children and twenty five (25) women passengers were on board because the boat is old.

But rescuers have resumed the place in search of the remaining persons and bodies.
