The Electoral Commission (EC) has
denied granting permission for any new political to start operating this year.
A release from the commission,
signed by acting Director of Public Affairs, Christian Owusu-Parry said that the commission has not registered any political
party this year.
“The Electoral Commission wishes to
inform the general public that, contrary to reports in the media, the
Commission has not registered any political parties this year…,” portions of
the release read.
The release is said to be in
reference to media reports that the former Presidential Candidate of the
People’s National Convention (PNC), Hassan Ayariga has formed a new party, All
People’s Congress (APC).
The report continued that the EC set to issue Mr.
Ayariga with a temporal license as they proceed to verify the credibility of
the proposed party.
But the EC said it is yet to
register any political party this year.
“The commission further wishes to
clarify that the persons who apply for registration of political parties have
several requirements which must be met under the Political Parties Act 2000
(Act 574).
Until these requirements have been met and a party had been issued
with a final registration certificate, the party seeking registration cannot
conduct its activities as a political party,” the statement continued.
The EC statement further advised and
reminded applicants that ‘it is against the provisions of Act 574 to canvass
for votes until the party has been issued with a final registration
certificate’.
