Hanna Tetteh, Woyongo to face Parliament over Guantanamo detainees

A Member of Parliament’s Committee on Defence and Interior says he will urge his colleagues to invite and question Foreign Affairs and Interior Ministers over the Guantanamo detainee’s brouhaha.

Major Derrick Oduro told Citi News Parliament is at a loss as to why the government took the decision and will demand answers from the sector ministers.

According to him, Ghanaians do not seem ready for the possible implications of hosting suspected terror suspects.

He insisted that “Government should have prepared the minds of Ghanaians before bringing in the detainees. Now every Ghanaian is going through some mental torture including panic and fear.”

He said Ghanaians need to know about the security implications of the issue in order “to conscientise our minds before they are brought in.”
“..The minister must appear before Parliament and brief us so that the people will put out their fears.

We will call the Minister before parliament to explain to us the security implications. So we shall put a request to the Speaker of Parliament and he will allow the business committee to prepare and invite both ministers to come and brief Parliament. The minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration will also appear,” Major Derrick Oduro added.

Two Guantanamo bay detainees, Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby who had been in detention for 14 years, after being linked with terrorist group Al-Qaeda, are currently in Ghana.

The decision to transfer the two Yemen citizens to Ghana in a bid to reintegrate them into society, has created fear and panic among Ghanaians.

But the US government insists they pose minimal risk to national security in their country and can be transferred.
