Revealed: Meet the Pilot who saved Mahama & wife



Undoubtedly one of the heroes of our time is Squadron leader Selase Yayra Agbenyefia of the Ghana Air Force.

Wondering who she is? She is the skillful military officer who flew President John Mahama and his wife to safety last Friday.

Ghana's president John Mahama and his wife Lordina were flown to safety after a helicopter they were flying in from Sunyani en route to Kumasi embarked on “a precautionary landing” at Apatrapa – a suburb in Kumasi.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed the incident and attributed the unplanned landing to “bad weather.”

The mother of one, who apparently was the first female military helicopter pilot not only in Ghana but in the West Africa sub-region was born in 1978.

The officer, who declined an interview with StarrFMoline.com according to family sources, is elated about the President's open acknowledgment of her efforts.

She attended Mawuko Girls Secondary School (1989-1991) and Mawuli Secondary School (1991-1996) for her ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels respectively. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration (Banking and Finance) from the University of Ghana (2009) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.

Sqn Ldr Agbenyefia received her basic flight training at the Flying Training School, Takoradi Air Force Base in 1999-2000 where she studied Air Law, Aerodynamics and Aviation Safety among other courses. She was adjudged the best cadet in Rotary Wing as well as in Academics and was commissioned into the Ghana Air Force in December 2001.
